IV Sedation

Service image

IV sedation, or intravenous sedation, is a method of administering sedative medication directly into a patient’s bloodstream through an IV (intravenous) line. The level of sedation is adjusted throughout the procedure by the anaesthetist, ensuring patient comfort and safety.

Key Points About IV Sedation:

  • Conscious Sedation: Unlike general anesthesia, which is a state of controlled unconsciousness, IV sedation is conscious sedation. Patients remain awake but are deeply relaxed, and usually not remember much of the procedure afterward.

  • Inexpensive: cost for the anaesthetist for IV sedation is less than general anaesthesia.

  • Quick Onset: The effects of IV sedation begin quickly as the medication is delivered directly into the bloodstream.

  • Control: The level of sedation can be easily adjusted throughout the procedure to meet the patient’s needs.

  • Recovery: Although the effects wear off relatively quickly, patients will need someone to drive them home and should rest for the remainder of the day.

IV sedation is especially useful for patients with dental anxiety, those undergoing complex procedures, or individuals who have a strong gag reflex.
