A dental crown is a tooth-shaped cap that are placed over a damaged or weakened tooth to restore its shape, size, strength, and appearance. Here’s a detailed explanation of what dental crowns is and why they are used:

You may need a dental crown for several reasons:

  1. Tooth Damage: If a tooth is severely decayed, cracked, or fractured and cannot be effectively restored with a filling or other dental treatments, a crown can provide strength and protection. Crowns hold together and stabilize a damaged tooth, preventing further breakdown.

  2. Large Fillings: When a tooth has a large filling that compromises its structural integrity, placing a crown can help support and protect the remaining tooth structure. Crowns cover the entire visible portion of the tooth above the gum line.

  3. Root Canal Treatment: After undergoing a root canal procedure to remove infected or damaged pulp from within the tooth, a crown is often placed to seal and protect the tooth from further damage. It restores the tooth’s function and prevents fracture.

  4. Cosmetic Enhancement: Crowns can be used for aesthetic purposes to improve the appearance of teeth that are discolored, misshapen, or poorly aligned. They can help achieve a more uniform and pleasing smile.

  5. Supporting Dental Bridges: Crowns are used as abutments (supporting anchors) for dental bridges, which replace one or more missing teeth. The crowns are placed on adjacent healthy teeth to hold the bridge securely in place.

  6. Children's Dentistry: In some cases, dental crowns are used for children to save severely decayed primary (baby) teeth that cannot support a filling.

In essence, dental crowns are versatile restorations that protect and strengthen compromised teeth, restore their function, and enhance their appearance.
